Mo’nique has had a rough go of it in the news lately, from her blackballing becoming public knowledge to the world to a feud with Netflix that was supposed to get people on her side—but backfired. But regardless of your beliefs about her and her stance, she is still a human being, and People reports a happy milestone for her on the front of her weight loss journey.
The positive here is the fact that Mo’nique has managed to be under 200 pounds for the first time in over 33 years. The news first came out via an Instagram. “I said that I would share this journey with y’all, the weight loss and getting healthy,” Mo’nique said in a video. “And today when I got on the scale, since I was 17 years old, I’ve been over 200 lbs. Today was the first time in my adult life that I’ve been under 200 lbs. So I wanted to let y’all know it’s possible, we can do it and we can get there.”
She also made a note that she didn’t rely on what she calls “gimmicks” in order to make this happen. “For me it was with no surgery, no pre-packaged foods, not listening to no spokespeople saying ‘it’s easy, you can do it.’ It was just putting in the work and not giving up on me,” she said. This is a satisfying conclusion for those who have been following the comedian and actress on Instagram, as she has been chronicling her weight loss regimen daily, including eating a raw diet and working with trainer Dwight Holt Jr.
“So I want to share with y’all what it looked like on the scale this morning, and I want to share with y’all the goodness that you can eat and still drop this weight. It’s called raw foods, it’s called dancing your pounds off. It’s called giving yourself the chance to live the best life you can live. Thank you all for sharing my journey.” In a way, this is a bit of going full circle for her. Earlier in her career, Mo’nique’s image as a proud larger black woman defined her, but as we learn more about what being overweight can do to the body, it’s a pleasant sight to see her healthy and happy with herself.
